But only those with deep pockets could afford to use it for vehicle graphics and it was the US Air Force that first took up the idea, using vinyl to create labels for their aircraft.
The real boom in vehicle wrapping came in the 1980s, as the costs of the materials fell and new printing and cutting technologies made vinyl wraps more affordable than ever before.
And this is where the story takes a slightly bizarre turn. In the 1990s, German taxis were required by law to be painted an unattractive beige colour. That meant that the used vehicles had virtually no resale value and the owners were spending a fortune in paint jobs.
Someone eventually realised that a beige vinyl wrap was the answer to all their problems. Not only could they brand their vehicle fleet with a consistent look that passersby immediately recognised, but the wrap was easy to remove and left the original paintwork spotless, leading to high resale values.
